In 1950, Fender introduced the Esquire, the very first solid - body electric guitar. It had an elegant single - cutaway shape, an adjustable 3 - saddle bridge, and a unique lap - steel pickup at the bridge. The Esquire set the standard for all solid - body electric guitars and was a precursor to the famous Telecaster. The 70th Anniversary Esquire, like its early models, has a pine body. Pine is a lightweight wood that produces a punchy and complex tone. The body undergoes a roasting treatment, which significantly enhances resonance. Other features include a lacquer finish, a thick “U” - shaped neck, a Tim Shaw - designed Esquire bridge pickup inspired by a 1950 Esquire from the Songbirds Museum in Chattanooga, TN, a special anniversary neck plate, and a tweed case. Production of this anniversary model is limited to 2020 only.
